This rhizomatous Missouri native, commonly known as Mayapple, sends up a single stem supporting two glossy, divided, umbrella like leaves above a single, waxy, white flower with many stamens. The large, lemon shaped berry is edible when ripeand golden

Podophyllum peltatum: (Zones 1,2)

Plant in full to part shades in neutral to slightly acidic soils. Ideal for naturalising in a woodland setting. Can tolerate damp and dry conditions once established. Space plants about 30–45 cm apart, as they will spread slowly. Leaves appear in Spring and the plant becomes dormant in Summer after fruiting. All parts of the plant are toxic with the exception of the ripe fruits.
